PCOS- what is it?

Updated: Mar 17, 2023

It's time we talk about something that affects many of us but isn't talked about enough: PCOS.

So, what the heck is PCOS? Well, PCOS stands for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, which is a hormonal condition that affects 1 in 10 women of reproductive age. Basically, it means that your ovaries aren't functioning the way they should be. You see, normally, your ovaries produce eggs every month and release them during ovulation. But with PCOS, the eggs may not mature properly or they may not be released at all.

Now, you might be wondering, "how do I know if I have PCOS?" Girl, where do I even begin? There are a whole bunch of symptoms that can come with PCOS, including:

  • Irregular periods

  • Acne

  • Weight gain (especially around the waistline)

  • Excess hair growth (on the face, chest, and stomach)

  • Thinning hair on the scalp

  • Mood swings

  • Infertility

Whew, that's a lot, right? And here's the thing: PCOS isn't just about missing a period or two. It can have serious implications for your overall health. Women with PCOS are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and endometrial cancer. So, it's important to take this condition seriously and follow up on it if you suspect you may have it. You are your own best health advocate!
