Vitamin D for your cycle

Are you one of the millions of women who suffer with irregular periods? An "avergae" cycle is anywhere from 28-31 days. If you notice that your cycles are quite out of that range most months, or that it varies from month to month, take note! Vitamin D just might be a solution! Vitamin D plays a crucial role in regulating our menstrual cycle. It helps to balance our hormones and improve our overall reproductive health.

Studies do show a link between vitamin D and cycle regularity. Vitamin D deficiency can cause a prolonged follicular phase, that causes delayed ovulation, and a longer or irregular cycle. Women with lower vitamin D levels are more likely to experience long or irregular cycles. So how can we get more vitamin D? The easiest way is through sun exposure- just 10-15 minutes a day can give you all the vitamin D your body needs. But for those of us who dont live in particularly sunny areas, you could also get vitamin D through your diet. Foods like mushrooms, oily fish, and dairy products are high in vitamin D. Or you could always supplement- vitamin D3 or cod liver oil are good forms to use. Here are some other symptoms of vitamin D deficiency:

  • Fatigue

  • Not sleeping well

  • Bone pain or achiness

  • Depression or feelings of sadness

  • Hair loss

  • Muscle weakness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Getting sick more easily

  • Pale skin

If you check several of these boxes, it could be a sign your vitamin D levels are low. If you are not sure, you could always ask for blood test to check your levels. Vitamin D can be a simple solution to irregular periods, but it is not the only option. If you have tried vitamin D and did not see improvement, there are other options you could try, so don't lose hope.
